Combining psychological realism with theological horror, The Exorcist is both a story of demonic possession and a meditation on faith, innocence, and evil. Inspired by a 1949 exorcism of a young boy, Blatty took stimulants to write for 16 hours a day, completing the novel in 10 months. A veteran of the US Air Force Psychological Warfare Division, Blatty would also go on to write the screenplay for the 1973 film adaptation which has been dogged by allegations of CIA involvement.
